Regina, the Evil Queen, wakes up in the middle of the night, barely in time to stop the would-be-assassin from plunging the dagger into her heart. She uses her magic to immobilize the woman and takes the dagger from her. This is not the first time someone’s made an attempt on her life, and she knows it won’t be the last, but it is the first time someone’s made it as far as her bedchambers and Regina can’t help but feel somewhat impressed.
Emma lies on the bed, unable to move but her head. She knows she’s about to die, that much is given; hazards of the job: kill or get caught and die.
“You know who I am, no doubt,” the Evil Queen states. “And you know of my code.”
Emma nods; she has heard of the Queen’s code for those about to face death by her hand. The condemned are allowed to ask for one thing, as long as it’s not their life or freedom.
“Well, what is your request?” the Queen asked, her tone not malicious or bored as Emma would have expected, but emotionless and distant.
“I have a son, Henry. He is only ten and can’t survive on his own yet. I ask that you see he gets placed in a good home,” Emma requested.
It’s not what the Queen had expected to hear. An assassin who has a child? That’s a liability, unheard of. Plain stupid really. Staying the knife under the woman’s chin, Regina voices her opinion and the feisty blonde states that life has a habit of not turning out how you expect it. At the Queen’s raised eyebrow, Emma reluctantly reveals the bare basics of her life’s story. She was raised in an orphanage, ran away with another orphan and, as soon as she discovered she was pregnant with his child, he disappeared. Desperate for money, she began to steal. Once she got caught, she talked herself out of punishment by agreeing to do a bigger scam. After getting caught again, she talked herself out of another punishment by agreeing to take a life… Turns out that killing was something she was at, until now.
Something about the story, about one bad situation leading to another while you’re just fighting to survive, tugs at Regina. She removes herself from the bed and releasing the blonde from her frozen state.
Asking Emma to reveal who was behind the attempt on her life, she’s disappointed but not at all surprised when the blonde says she doesn’t know. She’s not even sure why, but she believes the assassin. And so Regina does the unthinkable: she spears the woman’s life, in exchange for her help in getting rid of Regina’s nemesis, Rumpelstiltskin. Emma, of course, agrees at once.
The mission is not an easy one, however, and will require both time and research to be successful. It also requires trust, which doesn’t come easy for either woman. They’ve both relied only on themselves for as long as they can remember, life having taught them that any other path only leads to them not being in control of their own lives. Regina never lets her guard down, constantly expecting the assassin to make another attempt, while Emma doesn’t really believe that Regina won’t kill her in the end anyway.
And when Regina brings Henry to the castle as “assurance”, the situation gets even more complicated when the boy finds the Queen, and her ability to do magic, infinitely intriguing. To make matters worse, Regina finds herself catering to the brat’s wishes.
Slowly, with the weeks slipping by, Regina and Emma begin to trust each other. Regina’s goal of freeing herself from the last ties to her former mentor becoming more of a common desire as Emma learns about Regina’s past.
More than anything, though, it is their acceptance of each other’s darkness that unites them. Regina accepts Emma as who she is, as life has molded her.  She never makes Emma feel inferior for having made the choices she has in order to stay alive and, later, take care of her son. Likewise, Emma doesn’t so much as flinch when Regina takes the heart of a disobedient soldier and turns it into ashes.
In each other both women recognize someone who understands and accepts them as they are.  They both despise feeling vulnerable and weak but when they realize they can trust each other, they know they can be stronger together. And that is more valuable than anything.
The last research trip takes Emma to caves beyond the borders of Regina’s kingdom, where she accidentally breaks a curse almost thirty years old, waking a princess and her prince from a sleeping curse. It’s not until she returns with the couple to Regina’s castle that she learns of their connection to her.
And that’s when the real trouble begins.
